Review of Interventions to Improve Outdoor Air Quality and Public Health
Description
Report providing evidence-based guidance to inform local actions to reduce air pollution and its impacts on health. Includes interventions to address mobile sources, buildings, industrial sources, agriculture, and individual behavior.
Questions this resource can help answer
- What are demonstrated interventions to reduce air pollution in cities?
- What are factors that need to be considered for specific types of air pollution interventions to increase their effectiveness in reducing emissions?
How do I use this resource?
This report provides evidence for potential to improve air quality nationally and locally, potential to achieve health co-benefits, potential to address inequalities, feasibility, and speed of impact. Interventions include prevention or reduction of emissions, reduction in ambient concentrations, and avoidance of exposures.

Technical specifications
Rapid evidence assessments were used to gather and summarize information on interventions. Focus of the assessments was on air pollution and health effects, but also included co-benefits and impacts. Expert input was used to peer review the assessments. Delphi approaches were used to rank air pollution problems. Interventions were evaluated for their effectiveness in improving health outcomes, potential for health co-benefits, potential to address health inequalities, feasibility, and timescale to benefits.
