How do I use this resource?
The website provides several tools to screen for health risks from air toxics from several different emissions source categories. There are two Microsoft Excel spreadsheet tools for download, including cancer risks for nonroad diesel engines, and cancer and noncancer risks for stationary sources. Documentation for each tool is available as PDF files. To use the diesel engine spreadsheet, you need information on the engine’s power rating, Tier rating or year of manufacture, operating hours per year, and distance of engine to the nearest property line. Data is entered into a form in the spreadsheet, and risks are displayed in the Step 3 box. Recommendations for ways to minimize risks are in a separate tab.
To use the stationary source tool, you need information from the permit application including stack height and distance to property line, and annual and hourly emissions rates for each air toxic. Enter the stack characteristics in the upper section of the form, and the quantities of emissions in the table below. Cancer risks and hazard quotients are presented in the table.

The diesel screening tool uses engineering data on emissions rates, dispersion modeling results, and unit risk estimates from the NJDEP list of inhalation toxicity values.
