California CARB Pollution Mapping Tool

This is a comprehensive tool that allows users to query, locate, and view GHG, criteria, and air toxics emissions. The tool includes maps, charts, and tables, and allows for visualization of trends over time. The tool allows users to display community vulnerability data. Maps and data are downloadable.

How do I use this resource?

There are many features to this tool. To get started, select years of interest, geographic region, sectors, and pollutants from the left panel. Results will be displayed in the main map. One helpful way to narrow results is to set a lower limit on the emissions (at the bottom of the left panel). You can display additional data on the map by selecting from the "map layers" tab, including community vulnerability data from CalEnviroScreen. Results are also show in a table to the right of the map. You can select the charts tab to display pie or bar charts. You can see the individual data points in the "data" tab, and there you can also download the emissions data. There is a user's guide and video tutorial available in the "help" tab.

Methodology

Emissions information is drawn from the California Emissions Inventory Development and Reporting System, and the California Toxics Inventory. Vulnerability data is from CalEnviroScreen. The Control Strategy Tool (CoST), developed in 2008, is part of EPA's Emissions Modeling Framework (EMF). CoST is used to estimate emissions reductions and engineering costs associated with control strategies applied to point and area sources of air pollutant emissions to support the analyses of air pollution policies and regulations.

EPA's MOtor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES) is a state-of-the-science emission modeling system that estimates emissions for mobile sources at the national, county, and project level for criteria air pollutants, greenhouse gases, and air toxics, available under EPA's Open Source Software policy.

SMOKE

SMOKE is primarily an emissions processing system designed to create gridded, speciated, hourly emissions for input into a variety of air quality models such as CMAQ, REMSAD, CAMX and UAM. SMOKE supports area, biogenic, mobile (both onroad and nonroad), and point source emissions processing for criteria, particulate, and toxic pollutants. For biogenic emissions modeling, SMOKE uses the Biogenic Emission Inventory System. SMOKE is also integrated with the on-road emissions model MOVES.
